Explained: How long parents can sponsor children on a UAE residency visa
Know the age limits, legal requirements, and guidelines for 2025

Foreign residents in the UAE can sponsor their children’s residency visas, but the permitted duration varies based on age and gender.
Sons can remain under sponsorship until they reach 25, while unmarried daughters have no age restrictions. Children with special needs qualify for lifelong sponsorship.
These guidelines align with the UAE’s immigration policies under Federal Law by Decree No. (29) of 2021 and Cabinet Resolution No. (65) of 2022, which govern family sponsorship regulations in the country.
Sponsorship rules for parents
According to UAE law, a foreign resident with a valid residence permit may sponsor:
- Sons under 25 years of age
- Daughters, provided they remain unmarried (no age limit)
- Children with special needs, regardless of age
- Spouses, in line with existing visa regulations
Duration of Residency Permits
Family members’ residency permits match the validity period of the sponsor’s visa. For example, if the sponsor holds a two-year residence visa, their dependents' permits will also be issued for two years. Green Residence Permit holders have additional benefits, allowing sponsorship of first-degree relatives under similar terms.
Legal basis for sponsorship
The provisions for family sponsorship are detailed under Article 9 of the UAE’s Foreign Residency Law and Article 54 of its Executive Regulations. These regulations ensure consistency in sponsorship policies while allowing flexibility for expatriate families.
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) are the official entities overseeing residency visa policies.
